What Size Lamp for a Dresser?

Most dressers stand 30 to 36 inches tall, which is higher than a side table and lower than a console. That points toward a lamp of roughly 20 to 28 inches overall, shorter than the 24 to 34 inches that suits a console.

A useful check is that the lamp and dresser together reach somewhere near 55 to 62 inches, close to standing eye level, so the group feels balanced when you walk into the room.

A dresser is deeper and wider than a nightstand, but it is also a working surface. Aim for the lamp to take up no more than about a third of the dresser width, and keep the shade from overhanging the front edge.

For shade width, the usual proportion still applies: roughly one and a half to two times the widest part of the base. On a shallow dresser, check the shade does not project over the front where it could be caught.

A mirror above the dresser is the most common complication. Keep the top of the lamp below the bottom edge of the mirror if you can, so the shade does not cut into the reflection or block your view.

If the mirror sits low, choose a shorter, wider lamp rather than a tall one, or move the light to a pair of wall sconces flanking the mirror. Sconces at eye level also give better light for getting ready than a single lamp off to one side.

A single lamp placed toward one end of a long dresser looks intentional and leaves the rest of the surface usable, which suits a dresser you actually use daily. Balance it visually with a tray, a plant, or framed art at the other end.

A matched pair works well on a wide dresser used more as a display surface, especially with art or a mirror centred between them. On a dresser under about 48 inches wide, a pair usually crowds the top.

A dresser lamp is usually a second ambient layer in the bedroom rather than a task light, so a warm 2200K to 2700K bulb with a light-colored shade that spreads a soft glow is a good default.

If you use the dresser for getting ready, you need more even light on your face than a single side lamp provides. Add a second source on the other side, or light the mirror from both sides, rather than reaching for one very bright bulb.
