Bedside Lamp Size Guide: Height, Scale, and Placement
Choose the right bedside lamp height and shade size for your nightstand and bed, with practical US measurements and placement tips.

Bedside lamp sizing checklist
- Start around 24–30 inches tall.
- Align the shade bottom near seated shoulder height.
- Keep the bulb hidden from your normal viewing angle.
- Leave useful open space on the nightstand.
- Keep the base stable and cords clear.
The quick answer
For most beds, start with a lamp that is 24–30 inches tall overall. When you are sitting up in bed, the bottom of the shade should be close to shoulder height so the bulb is screened from your eyes.
Treat that range as a starting point, not a rule. A tall mattress on a low nightstand may need a taller lamp; a platform bed with a tall nightstand may need a shorter one.
Measure the bed and nightstand together
Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress, then from the floor to the nightstand top. A nightstand that sits within roughly 2–4 inches of the mattress top is usually easy to reach.
Next, sit against your pillows and measure from the nightstand top to your shoulder. That gives you a useful target for the bottom edge of the shade.
Choose a shade that fits the surface
A shade around 12–16 inches wide works on many standard nightstands. Leave enough open surface for a phone, book, and water without crowding the lamp base.
As a practical check, the widest part of the lamp should occupy no more than about two-thirds of the nightstand width. Keep the base fully supported and away from the edge.
Set the height for comfortable reading
For reading in bed, keep the light slightly above and beside your shoulder rather than directly in front of your face. The shade should hide the bright bulb at your normal sitting angle.
If two people share the bed, separate lamps or adjustable reading lights give each person better control. A decorative lamp can provide atmosphere while a focused source handles close reading.
Handle small nightstands and wall lights
On a narrow nightstand, choose a compact base or move the light to the wall. A plug-in wall sconce can free the surface without requiring permanent wiring.
Always keep cords out of the walking path and follow the fixture manufacturer’s clearance and installation directions.
