Pendant Light Height Over a Kitchen Island

Measure from the kitchen island countertop to the bottom of the pendant. A 30–36 inch clearance is a reliable starting range for many 8-foot ceilings.

For a taller ceiling, the pendant may rise slightly, but sightlines and useful task light matter more than following a fixed ceiling formula. Follow the fixture maker’s minimum clearances.

Stand and sit on both sides of the island. The pendant should not block faces, cabinets, a range hood, or the view into the room.

In an open-plan space, step back to the living area and entry. Raising a pendant by even 2–3 inches can make the room feel more open without losing the visual anchor.

For two or three pendants, begin with 24–30 inches between the center points, then adjust for shade diameter and island length. Keep the outer shades roughly 6–12 inches inside the island ends.

Wide shades need more separation; narrow pendants can sit closer. Lay painter’s tape on the countertop to mark center points before installation.

Two larger pendants often suit a medium island, while three smaller pendants create an even rhythm over a longer one. Prioritize balanced coverage over filling every inch.

Add the shade diameters and planned gaps, then compare that total with the usable island length. This simple check prevents a crowded layout.

Mock up each shade with cardboard or a lightweight paper shape suspended from removable tape. View it from the main entrances and seats.

Permanent electrical work should follow local requirements and the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a qualified electrician when required.
